Animals + Humans = One health

European Commission

As one of the main partners of the EU Veterinary Week, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) works, among other priorities, to protect and raise the health status and condition of animals in the EU, in particular food-producing animals, while permitting intra-Community trade and imports of animals and animal products in accordance with the appropriate health standards and international obligations. Biosecurity is an integral part of the EU’s Animal Health Strategy for 2007–13.
For the series of actions focusing on biosecurity at borders, DG SANCO will also work closely with the Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union, which is responsible for managing, defending and developing the customs union as a vital part of protecting the external borders of the EU.
In addition, other Directorate-Generals will be involved such as, the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport and the Directorate-General for Trade, together with European institutions (European Parliament and the Council for the European Union).
